Inspired by Sylvan Gutier, I set out to design a wooden whale, cranked by a handle, moving as if it is swimming in the ocean, due to its body being separated into different segments and each moving in correlation with an offset metal bar.

Whale Crank

I was facinated by the simple yet elegant mechanism of the whale and how the calming motion of the wooden parts resemble waves and marine life at the same time

Motion

The segments of the whale are connected through metal bars to an oscillating crankshaft handle, creating an up and down motion through the body of the whale.

Technique

Through the use of constraints, in Blender, I made a system of joints and levers to move the whale by a single motion of rotating the crankshaft. I am always interested in seeing the beauty in the technicality of things, and intrigued to breakdown the operations of mechanical systems.
